COOK MEMORIAL,
WORK TO BE STARTED TO-DAY,
Tbo residents of the East Coast will be pleased to learn that Mr W. Mason, of the firm of MoNab and Mason, of Auckland, bas arrived in Gisborne, and that a start will be made this morning with the ereotion of the monument to the momory of Captain Cook. Several members of the committee, with the ohairman, Rev. H. Williams, met Mr Mason on the Haiti beaob yesterday, and pointed out the site which has been fixed for the memorial. The site selected is at the foot of the Eaiti Hill, right alongside the breakwater, RDd whon the outer harbor soherno for Gisborne has been finally determined, it may be one of the most pleasing ornaments to meet the gaza of visitors. It is sufficient for the present, however, to know that it will grace the aotual landing plaoo of Captain Cook, and be the first memorial to that illustrious navigator erected in New Zealand. With this objeot in view, it may well be claimed that the promoters bave ably fulfilled the object with wbiob they eet out. The monument, whioh was made at Aberdeen, Bootland, of the world-famed granite, was shipped by the Tyser liner Marore, and is expeotod to reach Gisborne early next week. Messrs MoNab ana
Mason will have the work completed in time for the unveiliog, which has been fixed for October Blb, tbe anniversary of Captain Cook’s arrival in New Zealand. A meeting of tbe oommittee of the Cook Memorial Fund is called for Friday next, to make arrangements for the unveiling coremony and the laying of the foundation stone, Tbe latter oeremony will take plaoe on Thursday, 19th inst. For the unveiling oeremony it is hoped to bave the attendance of Hia Excellency tbe Governor, the Premier. Cabinet Ministers, members of Parliament, and as manj 1 representative men of the polony as oar I possibly attend.
