TROTTING CONFERENCE
(P*r Frew Association.) Wellington, last night. Tbo New Zealand TrottiDg Conference opened to-day. with Mr T. Daooan in the obair, In his opening address the chair man expressed the Association's regret at the los3 of the president, Mr G. H. Mo Haffie, who had been chiefly known by the untiring zeal and energy whioh he displayed alike in tbs government of trot' ting arid in the public interests. During the season, he continued, so far as he had been able to judge, there was no doubt that both the regulation and control of the sport had been of a most satisfactory oharaotet, and interest in trotting among ihd general public throughout the colony had'shown a steady all-round progress. The clubs appeared to be on a sound financial footing The first New Zealand trotting stud book bad been recently published, ami tbo Association was now moving in the direotion of establishing a colonial trotting and pacing standard. Although nothing phenomenal so far as fresh times were oonoerned had beon recorded, all round the speed had rapidly increased with the continued improvement wrought in the breed duriDg the year. Six new clubs bad been affiliated, one in Canterbury, three on the West Ooftßfc of the South Island, and two in Taranaki. Twenty-five olubs bad held a total of 38 meetings, comprising 67 davs' racing, 510 races (including heats), £25,000 in added money, and £228,950 in totalisator receipts. Compared with the previous year, this meant an increase of £1375 in stakoß and £37,980 on the maohine.
