MR TREGEAR’S LUCK,

It is lucky for Mr Tregear that the sympathy in politics nowadays leans largely to the one side. A private letter which was made public declared Mr Tregear to be a Socialist of an advanced type who looks on employers as exploiters of labor. Being in an administrative office, it was naturally expected that Mr Tregear would be prepared to doal fairly by both employers and employees, but his own letter shows that he has a very marked bias against employers, and therefore the alarm of the Employers’ Federation is not groundless. It was thought the Government would at least have cautioned the champion of advanced Socialism, but apparently they have justified him. The workers have been eager to defend Mr Tregear; the Government have upheld him, and altogether Socialism is getting a big innings. Mr Trogear is such an earnest, well meaning man that most people will be glad that he has not suffered severely for his indiscretion ; but there will be much cause for redaction in his pronounced Socialistic views being practically endorsed by the Government.
