GAOLER GARVEY DEAD.
THE GOVERNOR OF TERRACE PRISON.
’(Per Piess Association.) Wellington, last night. Obitnary: P. S. Gacyey, Governor of the Terrace Prison, Wellington, Two months ago be was laid aside with an attaok of pleurisy,- and - the added trouble of heart affeotion made bis condition so Berious that the doctors were alarmed. Later on, however, he gave signs of returning health, and he gradually improved until it was thought that in a week’s lime he would be fit to resume his office, but yesterday morning, after he hsd been talking quietly to one of his ohildren, he sud leuly collapsed and died. Doath was clue to heart failure. Deoeascd was born in 1850 in Ireland. He began life as olerk in the oounty inspector’s office, and had experience in the Royal Irish constabulary force before coming to New Zealand. In his early manhood, at the age of 22, he was appointed by the Prisons Department to a post in the Lyttelton gaol, and he made more than ordinary progress in regard to promotion. From 1875 to 1881 he was olerk in the piison, and he then volunteered for discipline duty, In 1882 he was transferred to Welliogton as ohief warder in oharge of the Monnt Cook gaol,. In 1884. he was made gaoler at the Terrace prison, aDd a year liter, ou the retirement of Mioaiah Reid from the governorship of the gaoi, Mr Garvey suooaeded him, and has fi led that post ever since, besides Carrying out-the duties of probation offioerV
