The proprietor of a billiard saloon was to-day charged with keeping open after 11 p.m. The evidence showed that the proprietor and another man were sitting down having some supper, the tables being covered and the lights over them out. For the defence, the evidence was that the man was a personal friend of the proprietor, occasionally assisted in marking, and generally stopped behind to help cover up tho table, and sometimes had supper. Mr Widdowson, S.M., on dismissing the case, said he thought it was very much on the border line. At the Police Court to day, George Spiers was charged with place betting at Tahuna Park. It was alleged accused placed a kerosene tin on the road adjoining Tahuna Park, and from this made bets with those outside. Mr Hanlon, for the defence, raised the legal points that the road was not a place within the meaning of the section ; that there were no evidence defendant had bet at all, and no evidence to show anyone resorted to “ the place ” for betting. This and four other cases in which the same points would be raised adjourned. A fishmonger at South Dunedin'who had engaged in tote bettting at Wingatui, pleaded guilty, and was lined £o and 13s. costs.
At the Burnside cattle yards to day an indignation meeting wa3 held to protest against the closing of the liaikorai Junction Hotel, dose to the yards, by the Taieri Licensing Committee, on the grounds that a house of the kind is wanted, It was oontended also, that people in Mosgiel, having voted largely in favor of prohibition, reduction should have taken plaoe there. A motion was oarriod with a few dissentients condemning the action of the Licensing Committee, and calling on the oommittee to resign forthwith.
Twenty-four applications have been received for the position of eloctrioal engineer at £7OO for the City Counoil, and the names have been sent to a oommittee to select the names of eight cf the mosii eligible. Applications oame from Sweden, Scotland, England, and Canada, seven from the Commonwealth, and eight from New Zealand, including four from Dunedin,
Invercargill, last night. The Invercargill corporation solicitors advise that the method of the ballot for the town clerkship last week was irregular, in that voting was not open. They advise that the Counoil should begin de novo. A Councillor, after Mr T. W. Walker had received eleven votes as against one in the Goal ballot, moved as an amendment that a candidate who had gone down in the fourth ballot be appointed, but the Mayor deolined to receive tho amerdment, The solicitors now say ho ought to have done so. The matter haß given rise to somo feeling and press correspondence, mostly in defence of Mr Wa'ker’e appointment, which was popular.
Wanganui, iaet night. The Wanganui Poultry, Pigeon, and Cage Bird Association’s annual Bhow opened to-day. The show is a very good one, the entries being large and the quality of a high order. Soler Brothers were awarded the North Island championship for Indian runners. G. R. Hutchison (Auckland) and F. Goadaore (New Plymouth) wero the chief winners. White Leghorns and Orpingtons were features of the.show.

Wellington, last night. Mr Culver, secretary of the Liberal and Labor Federation, has resigned his post. Mr T. A. Munro has been appointed secretary pro tern.
