At the Police Court yesterday George Moore was fined £5 and costs 13s, or in default 30 days’ imprisonment, for assaulting William Irwin oh June 7tb. The men were working at the wharf together, and as a result of a quarrel informant had bad his lip cut, bad b'en knocked down, and one of his teeth knock’d out. The evidence tended to show that defendant had received provocation, haying had a heavy truck twioe run over his foot, a protest on this point leading to an insulting reply, whereupon Moore took the law into his own hands, which the Magistrate said he was not justified in doing, although he*had received some provocation. The monthly meeting of the Charitable Aid Board was held last evening, and was attended by His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. Townley), and Messrs F. J. L.ysnar, Miller, Webb, Harding, Bright, and Whinray.
