CLOSE OF THE SEASON.

A very pleasing ceremony took plaoe yesterday at the olosing of the Gisborne Club’s green for tbe season. The President, Mr -T. A. Harding, in a few well-chosen remarks, slated tbe time had arrived when tbe committee thought it would be judicious to close the green for a period. He stated the season bad been a very pleasant one. They had had the pleasure of welcoming the Turanganui Club to a friendly game on tbe green ; our representatives bad held up tbe honor of the Club at Wellington, and all the contests had been finished up in good time. The health of the 11 President ” and 11 Committee ” was toasted with hearty cheers.

Mr Matthewson, President of the Turanganui Club, beiog ia attendance spoke well and feelingly in reply. Mr Ambridge, as a member, endorsed the remarks that all members must be. well satisfied with the season’s play, aod must support tbe heartiest thanks to tbe President, Siofetary, and Committee for the spleodid arrangements oarried out by them during tbe season. Mr W. Pettie, od behalf of the Committee, made a very able speech, and especi ally noted tbo great amount of time and energy displayed by the Secretary, and specially endo srd the remarks made as to the high position Messrs Ponaford, Massey, and Gaudin had attained for tbe Club in their play at the Wellington Tournomint.

Mr J. Poobford, at the final stage of the Club’s proceedings, was oallod forward, aod Messrs W. Pettie, J. A. Hatdiog, aod others said they wished to especially hank him for tbe position he had brought his Club up to daring the eeis.n, and to express their desire that he wou'd still cot,time to devot9 tbe aims time and attenlioo t) the game. They had, they said, er e y cor fid noo in him as a genora! who was second to none, Mr Pcnsford briifiy repliod, thanking tho speakors very heartily for their 'remarks. He said he hoped that members would not forget tbe Exhibition tournament to be held in Christohurob, ancj that they wou’ej get into aolive training early in the season. He would, he said, be pleased to skip a team, and felt sure be could gat a team capable of carrying the honor before them, the GisborDe Club possessing material eepond to none in New Zea’and.
