The last number of the New Z9a" land Kailway Review states that: <i Q ver 2000 hours’ overtime was ■worked by the Christchurch locomotive running stall in tho four weekly 'period ending April 28, and there has <not been the average absence through f /sickness. Of course the Easter holU days occurred during this period, but the overtime is always excessive at any time, through chronic shortage of 'hands. It cannot possibly be in the interests of economy, because .this overtime is paid for at time and a quarter rates. The same amount of expenditure would get some overtime. If a man applies'for holidays and gets a promise of them and makes arrange-, ments to visit distant friends, at the (very last moment he may be told that ;he cannot be spared. Thus he has to ~ J disappoint his family and friends.”
