Considerable exoitement was caused at Oollingwood last n’gbt by the arrest of a miner named John Martin, of Golden Ridge, in peoniiar and somewhat pathetic circumstances. Martin, who is aged 35, was married a year and some months ego to a Nelson girl named Bobb, and they lived happily together. Tha girl came to Oollingwood to be confined She gave birth to a child on Sunday, and died from hemorrhage yesterday Martin oame from I. Golden Ridge to see his wife, but on arrival of the Nelson steamer wa3 arrested pti a charge of wife desertion, bo being alleged to have a wife and three children .at Waihi. Marlio, whose unassuming manner had won the liking and respeot of all, was muob affected. The mother and staters of the dead girl arrived by the same steamer ae the arresting constable, i and are greatly prostrated by the develop* tnents.
