The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. GISBORNE, JUNE 25, 1906. AMERICAN FRAUDS.
The land of the “ woodon nutmeg ” is again making a name for itself. The meat horrors had the effect of causing a feeling of revulsion wherever the money-making packers had been heard of, and close upon the one scandal comes the other regarding railway concessions by which rivals are kept in check. But that is not all. Our cablegrams to-day disclose another form of rascality in regard to the people’s food supplies, and when | American bottled goods are being consumed by people in this colony ' who prefer the imported to the local product, there will be something to think of. It has been disclosed that articles which would be thought out of range of the “ faker ” are all made subservient to the inordinate greed for profit. The over smart manufacturer in America cannot wait for the cherries to ripen before turning them to marketable account, but regardless of the health of the consumer, makes use of dye to give the appearance of maturity. This is only one of a number of cases cited, and wore it not for the seriousness of the matter from a health point of view, there would be food for mirth in regard to one sweet substance. What has been represented as “ pure honey ” turns out to be glucose, and lest there should be any awakening of suspicion dead bees have been made use of. The clever device of the defunct bee is an illustration of the deception practised upon the consumers. The worst of it is that while these charges may really only have reference to a few manufacturers, all ! American houses are to an extent brought under the ban. Tho man or woman who has partakon of imported glucoso after picking out the body of the dead bee does not always scrutinise the brand. No disclosures would make honest men of tho rascals in America who become rich through adulterating tho food of the people, but by beiDg hit hard financially they may find it necessary to reform with the same feverish haste as the moat packers
