EAST COAST NEWS.
POUAWA.
(Times’ Correspondent.J Jnne 23rd. The prioeiple theme of conversation for
the last week has been the lamentable and unexpected demise of the late Premier, and extreme regret and sympathy is expressed on all bands at the loss sustained by tbe oolony. The Whangara sohool was olosed three days last week as a mark of respect to the memory' of the deceased statesman.
The sohool closed yesterday for a week, beiDg tbe usual winter holidays.
The weather is still holding on to its record, the last week beiog still perfect; in faot, more enjoyable than mid-summer, as we have the sunshine without the ex
ireme heat. “ John Frost ” has paid a visit or two, and foroes one to get nearer the fire of a night, bat when the sun gets fall swing in the mornibg it fully compensates for all other disadvantages. The roads are first class.
A fine mob of 400 breeding ewes, the property of Mr Mclldowie, left here on Monday, in charge of Mr H. Bousfield, on their way to Gisborne for shipment to the Auckland market, It seems there is at present a strong demand in the North for a good olass of stock, and it is to be hoped Mr Mclldowie will have a satisfactory return, as he is to commended for bis enterprise.
