In the Supreme Court sentences were passed as follows : —Wm. Goldsmith, carnal knowledge, twelve months’ probation and to remain at home at nights after seven o’clock for nine months ; Jas. Madden, assault, six months ; Tai Punoa, carnal knowledge, three years ; Robert Morgan, theft, six months ; George Moore, assault, six months. James McKay pleaded guilty to thirteen charges of theft, and was remanded for sentence. Palmerston North, last night. A shop in the Square, owned by Mr W. Coombes and occupied by Mr W. Ryan, book and fancy goods seller, was totally dostroyed by fire at 1.30 this morning. The adjoining premises were damaged by smoke and water. Ryan’s stock was insured for £4OO in the Commercial, and the building for £SSO, £4OO being in tho Nat ; onal and the balance in the Alliance.
