Siii,—Can you toll mo why, in faoe of the universal mourning yestorday, whon oven tho tolograph office was dosed, tho youDg ladies omployed at tho Exohango were kopt at work, and not permitted by tbo authorities to take part' in tho memorial proooodings ? —I am, etc., ■ A LIBERAL.
[No oxooption, wo loarn, was made in tbo case of Gisborne, tho Exohnngo being kept opon throughout the colony. This seems very hard on tho employees, and has been disoussod on other oooaßions, but it has boon pointed out that tho closing of tho Exohango might result in groat publio inoonvenienoo, as in tho case of urgent calls from a distanoo on medioal men.— Ed.
