THE TARIFF.
(Per Piress Asaociation.) Auckland, last night. A letter was road from the Secretary of the Department of Trade and Customs at the meeting of the Council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, stating in reply to the Council’s letter, that Government had not announced any intention oi revising the present tariff during the coming session of Parliament. Nothing more had been done than to intimate that a Bill would be introduced to reduce and remit the duty on certain art’cles of general consumption. This did not involve revision of the tariff. The suggestion made by the Counoil would, however, receive consideration whenever revision of the tariff was contemplated. The President said it came rather as a surprise to him, beoause when he saw the late Mr S-ddon, the latter said something about the Customs duties and tariff, and remarked that it would be a very good thing for the Chambers of Commerce to give attention to this matter. It was deoided to support the resolution forwarded by the Napier Chamber of Commerce, urging that reasonable notice should always be given of any proposed reduction in tariff. AKSUN UASE.
