At Consumptive Sanatorium sports at Christchurch there was a greasy pig hunt which attracted the attention of the Society for tho Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The Inspector (Mr Zouch) said that the hunt was a case of cruelty, and he was informed that the pig had been poked with sticks to make it run. Miss Freeman thought that it was real cruelty. They would soon have cock fighting and bull fighting if no notice was taken. Mr McLaren wanted to know whether the Sports Committee would not have withdrawn the item from the programme if the inspector had approached them. Mr Zouch said that the Committee thought their programme was being interfered with when they were asked to withdraw the hunt. Mr Spiller was doubtful whether there was enough cruelty for tho institution of proceedings. Mr McLaren said the pig seemed to treat the matter as a joke, as he squatted down, and could not be induced to move It was decided to write to the Sports Committee expressing the Society’s regret that they should have iucluded the item in the programme.
