SWIMMING BATHS SOCIAL.

A MOST SUCCESSFUL GATHERING

Tbo promoters of the social hold in the , New Zealand Sbippicg Company’s wool " store last evening, in aid of the establishing in Gisborne of a swimming batb, are to be heartily congratulated upon tbo great Bucoess achieved. Despite tbe unfavorable Bta’o of the weathtr there was a largo and

representative gathering, upwards of two hundred couples being present, and tbe excellent arrangements made for tbe sooial as-sured to all a most enjoyable evening. Seldom has the New Zealand Shipping

Company’s commodious building been seen to such advantage as it was last evening.

The decorations were oarried out on a most elaborate eo&le, and tbe scene whilst

dancing proceeded was a meet animated

000. The materials used in the adornment of the interior of the building con-

sisted of nikau palms, ferns, and foliage, which together with tbe numerous flags kindly lent by the mercantile and shipping firms of Gisborne (the New Zealand Shipping Company’s being specially prominent) gave a very pleasing tffeot to the general appearance. Tbe work of decorating the ball was carried out by a large committee under tbe able supervision of Mr H. Withers, head storeman of the New Zealand Shipping Company. A speoial feature was made by tbe ladies’ committee, under the presidency of tbe Mayoress, in regard to the supper table decorations, which we,’,e entirely in keeping with the attractiveness of the mßin ball, and the wealth ol white Sowers here and*, there displayed added greatly to the general effect. There was an abundant supply of edibles donated by tbe ladies of the district, and needless to say full justice was done to the same. Where so many ladies contributed to tbe success of tho gathering it would be invidious to menticn names, and as tbe labor was one of love it is hardly necessary. There was a splendid floor provided for danoing, and the City .Band was beard at its best, as also wa? Misa - Ruth Moore’B splendid orchestra, which supplied the extras, playing a number of popular selections. Messrs J. A. Harding, A. Sawyer, W. Webb, J. Conder. and M. Craig male most efficient Masters of Ceremonies. The refreshment stall in the

capable hands of Messrs H. Martin, Sawyer, and J. • Little,’ proved a most popular institution, and did excellent business daring the evening. Tbe o’oak rooms were ran by the members of the Gisborne school staff, who ably dis* charged the duties falling to tbeir lit. The Mayor and Mayoress, Mr and Mrs J. Townley, were amongst those present throughout the evening, as also-were all the members of (he city SohooL Committee. Mr R. G. Hallamore, the popular manager of the .Shipping Company, was urn emitting in bis efforts to promote the success of the sooial, nothing being left undone towards that end. Mr Rowley, headmaster of tbe Gieborno sohool, officiated as treasurer, proving tbe right man in.tbe right place. Tbe honorary secretaries, Messrs T. G. Lawless and J. S. Wauchop, were the recipients of '-muoh congratulation upon the excellent manner in which they oarried out tbeir duties, it being generally-! ooubeded that a more happy selection could not have been made. Mr Lawless is an old and experienced hand in the management of socials, and assisted by a youogand active associate such as Mr Wauobop proved himself to be il was only to be expeoted everything would go off swimmiogly. The nikau palms for the decoration of the hall were supplied by the manager of the Turehau station, and the thanks of the committee are also due to Mr Tuoby, of Patutabi, for assistance in providing foliage. Tbe danoing programme comprised twenty-two members, besides extras, and dancing was continued with spirit UDtil an early hour this morning. To-night will be the children’s evening, when it is expeoted there wilt be a record attendance of both old and young, as after a certain hour the floor will be open to all. The object for which the sooial is promoted being an exceedingly populj£>one, we hope that everyone who <San possibly do so will make a point of attending, no matter wbat the weather is like.
