RUNNING MATCH.

McLACHLAN DEFEATS HOURIGAN

(Per Press Association.) Napier, last night. A running match, 100yds, loOyds, and j 150yds, between L. C. McLachlan, of New Zealand, and R. Hourigan, of New South Wales, took place on the Recreation Ground this afternoon for a stake of £SO aside. McLachlan was slightly the favorite, though Hourigan was the most fancied for the first distance, 100yds. The track was somewhat heavy and holding, and under the circumstances the times recorded were very fast. In the first distance both men got away well together, but Mc« Lachlan got more quickly into his stride, and soon had a lead of half a yard, which Hourigan reduced to about six inches at the half distance. McLachlan, however, drew away again in the last twenty good time 1 of lOsecs. The second distance was a repetition of the first, McLachlan leading by a foot for the first 20 yards, when Hourigan drew level, but McLachlan had him beaten when 75 yards had been traversed, and finishing with a great burst of speed, won by two yards in 13sec. The third distance was not run.
