THE TARIFF.
.(Per Press Association.) Wellington, last night. The Chamber of Commerce Tariff Revi
sion Committee presented a report, Genera’ly speaking, it favors abolition of the duty on tho necessaries of life, ine’uding eotiro remission of the duty on sugar. It sees no reason why the lobacco duty should bo reduced. Rtgardicg hardware, I tho report states that the anomalies which I exist are the result of the Commissioner's I interpretations more than the tariff itself. Recommendations in tho direction of simplicity and uniformity aro made, and I also in regard to soft geode, In respect of I drugs, recommendat’oos arc mads favorable to the encouragement of local manu« faoturers. The Chamber has adopted the I report, wbioh concludes as follows : '• The sivcral sections of your Committee do net pretend they have called attention to all tbo existiog anomalies in the present tariff, but have gone sufficiently far in that direction to show the need there is for a general reoonsideration of the tariff and tho Com« mhsioner’s decisions, and recommend that the Government be ark id to appoint sn Advisory Board of Expert 3, representing different branohes of trade, to assist the Commissioner in arriving at his deo'sions. This would go a long way towards removing the anomalies that now exist, and whiob, under the present unaidod deo : » sions of the Commissioner, are l>kc!y to arise in the future."
