Mr Thorne said if the Government did nothing he had advised the unemployed to adopt Mr Burns' suggestion of 1886, end go and help themselves. Mr Keir Hardie said a revival of the appr.eotioe system would soon Beoure an eight-hour day. The Government ought [ to grant a million pounds towards the unemployed. Mr John Bums sla'ed that 95 per oenl of the unemployed were unskilled laborers, and 90 per cent, town laborers, who had btea displaced by stronger-bred oountry men Parliament must devise some return to apprenticeship. It wou'd be better to prevent men leaving the laud than to place d;moralised townsmei on the land.
The Tribune, the new Liberal organ, admits that the attempted repatriation of Chioese has been a oompleie failure. Every consideration of honor has oompe led the Liberal leaders to give effect to the drastic reform enunoiated in their election speeches, otherwise the disappointment of the patty was extreme, and the reckoning exacted was corn spondingly heavy. ~
