A largo nurabor of objectors gathered at the sitting of the City Assessment Court this morning, and much interest centred in the procoed--ings. Most of the valuations showed a largo increase, but the Court declined to make any reductions, and after the first few casos a largo number of objectors put in no appearance. Tho question of appeal in several casos has boon raised. Tho Court declinod to consider whother tho return from properties was in proportion to tho assessment, and stated that it was guided by what it considered to be the fair selling value. '•“*** LyttohoD, last night, Eobort Dudley, master and owner of the ketch Comet, was found drowned in Lyttolton harbor, alongside his vessel, this morning Ho was an old rosident, and a vory stoady man.

A nino roomod wooden house in Pino Hill road, owned and occupied by J. W. Burloy, was burned down last night. Tho insurance is £550 on tho building in the Atlas, and £550 on tho furniture in the Victoria. No one was in the house at the time of the fire, which is supposed to have originated in the kitchen.
