NO CHANCE TO REPORM.
(Per Press Asiociation.) Wellington, Monday. A prisoner who oarao up for aentenoe efore the Chief Juatioe (S : r Robert Btout)
complained through his solicitor that bis way bad been made harder IhDn it might have been. Lately be came out of prison and was successful in getting employmi m in the office of a looal shipping company, but later on ho was told he would not be required. On demanding to koow the reason, he waa told that information had come to the company that bo hed been in gaol. It was shown by the police records, handed up to his Honor, that tbo prisoner had a long list of forgery convioiions against him, and that he was lately going round the city with bogus cheques in his possession, filled in with the Dames of several people, and ready to be issued; also that he had issued several forged ohrqaes. Having regard to the prisoner’s record, the Chief Jußticc said tbo prisoner seemed to be incorrigible, but (addressing himself to the prisoner) his Honor said he was sorry to hear that he had been interfered with by tho police or any other persons stating that be had been in gaol. He (the Chief Jaetice) did not koow if it had been done by the police, but he did not tbirik the police should interfere by saying to any employer that any person bad been in gaol, for when that was done any chance of reformation was hopeless. Mr Myers, tho Crown Prosecutor, said he had been atked by the Inspeotor of Police to say that the polioe neyer acted in this tnaDner.
His Honor, continuing, said he hoped the prisoner's statement was untrue, but be must say tbatrono person bad called on him and stated that a policeman bad informed an employer that this man bad lately come out of gaol. Mr Myers; "It does not follow that it’s true.”
His Honor : 11 No, but it’s a faot that She statement was made.”
