(Per Press Association.) Wairoa, yesterday. The census returns for Wairoa County have now been completed, and show the number of Europeans to be 2161, an increase of 388. Maori census 2100. Palmerston North, lasi night. At the inquest on the late Joseph Saunders, evidence was tendered that deceased had been suffering from insomnia for the past three years, and had been purchasing sleeping draughts for two years past. A verdict of suicide while suffering from temporary depression, was returned. Taihape, last night. Tho census of Taihape is 1269, against 400 at last census. Invercargill, last night. Ihe Supreme Court opened before Judge Denmston, who congratulated the jury on the practical absence of crime. On his last visit there had been no criminal cases, and now only two, one against a Chinaman, wounding with intent, and tho other against two young men, breaking and entering. The hearing of the case is proceeding.
Dunedin, last night. Commenting on tho charge of attempted suicide, the Magistrate said the publication of these cases made certain people dwell on tho subject, and under certain conditions commit similar acts. Ho asked tho presß to take notice of his remarks and refrain from publishing the dotails. A deputatioAroprosenting fruit consignees waited on the Minister in charge of Cook Islands this forenoon re the institution of a fortnightly servico with Raratonga. Mr Mills said the Government contemplated calling tenders for a steamer to run from Wellington to Norfolk Island, Noumea, New Hebrides, Fiji, Tonga, Niu, and Raratonga, and back to Wellington. This, with a 12-knot steamer, would probably bo done in a month, and ,if alternating with the present Auckland service, would give a fortnightly connection.
