GREAT LOAN LAND.
A CHIEF JUSTICE JUSTIFIES
BORROWING
By telegraph. Press Ass’n, Copyrigh Reoeivei 9 55 p m., May 29,
London, May 29. At a meeliDg of the Australasian Chamber cf Commerce, Mr E. T. Doxat presiding, 8r John Madden, Chief Justioe of Viotoria, read a paper on Australian loans acd securities. His object, he stated, was to controvert the pessimistic, unfair views expressed by certain papers. He had noticed that Australia’s adversities had been remembered while hgr heroic struggle and ooDquosts had been forgotten. He had not found the slightest ant'paihy towards Australia. On contrary she was most oordially welcomed. It was impossible for investors to find a safer country than Australia. Ho detailed the wonderfully assets, railways, produots of private wea tb, and manufactures. The story of Australia was one of prosperity—absolutely, splendidly progressive. It was sometimes interrupted by errors, but had always resumed with increasing prosper iy. Therefore Australia should be wr loomed as a first«olass customer. There was no reason why Australians should not meet their creditors with lofty hands. In regard to the Labor party it must be re* membered they were different from Labor patties ehewhere, many of them possessing their own properties, whioh they would ■ take care of. What Australia wanted to enable it to reaoh magnifioent proportions was all the immigration possible. They were anxious to get every industrious white man.
