FOR THE LADIES
WON'T KB NIvKDLBWOiiK,
Oiu- Wellington correspondent “ Pone--1 *°l K! "rites as follows on the subject of wintc-f needlework : ] j lO , loveliest examples of fancy work ■ii'e being shown in the shops now that the pveiiinjjs itre drawing in anil one has time r for sewing, Ifurdangor embroidery, sneli ns the Norwegian girls wear on their picturesque dresses, lias main admirers. H is workeil oh canvas, not the Berlin \ ariot.y, and oven in the cheaper cheese cloth is entirely satisfactory. It is a combination of drawn-thread work and point lace stitches, and is often worked in ' colored linen threads. The little Puritan collars arc charming in this embroidery, ami the new fronts—merely dainty strips ot lace or needlework stretching from a collar ot the same work to the belt—luok most elloetive when the centre of the band is Ilanlanger work, outlined witli tiny rnl)|es of Valenciennes. Some very hevy fP>}} l |oiekly.d(pie fancy work is tl|e sloiiedling, I saw a pair of charming curtains °* sheeting—there are infinite possibilities in this commonplace material, ilicy had deep hems, and above was a rmy of stiff blue tulips and green leaves, painted ip t|at conventional style with oil (■•ulors, ami outlined with coarso black embroidery thread, The ell’eet was most artistic with a minimum of trouble. The same idea might be carried out in colored jinoiiM button-holed on. The new cushion covers are fascinating. One—for a nursery, surely, because it hears with it a moral—has on it a group of children watching a boy leaching from a very high shelf a large pot of jam. Below was "Alles gutes konnnt von obon,” “Ah good things conic from high,” Another pretty ci|sl|ioi| coyer hip] a duster of ponyontjona! oranges and foliage printed on it, and only required outlining and touching here and there with silks of the same colors P'ur those with some skill in painting, there is no work so dainty as decorating one of those exquisite evening scarfs of gauze or ehillbn. The material must be stretched across a box and not laid on anything while you are painting it, or the pattern will be blurred. Black chiffon with clematis or purple chrysanthemums painted on it makes a perfectly ideal wrap for elderly shoulders, and anything lovelier than white gauze strewn with faintly tinted full blown roses is hard to 'imagine, Oil colors may be used for this, or water color with some medium, and the effect may be enhanced by introducing jewels or sequins.
