THE HARBOUR
(To the Editor Gisborne Times,
Sir,—How much longer do the members of tbe Harbour Board expeot to carry on this state of muddledom and incompetency in connection with our harbour. After spending hundreds of thousands of pounds wbat have we got in return ? No appreciable gain whatever in tbe depth of water, and I also sav, Sir, that the river entranoe is worse now than it was years ago. Why don't the Board firmly faoe the poßiticn and carry out the necessary works which they know are required to make a safe harbour of the rivor 2 No one in their cane senses would ever expect to see aDy of the big ocean liners oorne up to the wharf, but surely it is cot too muoh to expeot to see vessels drawing 12 or 14 feet of water safely navigate tbe river. All that appears to be required to accomplish this is the lengthening of the breakwater, successful dredging of the river, and a good awioging basin. But the Board will never do tbis with their present obsolete dredging michinery. Why no l , purchase a good suotiou and bucket dredgp, suoh as tbe Timaru dredge which is now in tbe maikat, and has dore sued good work at Timaru? It wculd leof e .per and bett « to give the John Townley away than to go on wasting any more money with her lor all the good *he does —I am, eto.,
