Auckland, last night. A groat crowd asai mblod at Cornwall Park >o il,iy, t > witness ibo unveiling by ilm Excellency the Governor of a statue to Sir John Logan o»mpbell, “ Father of Aucklaud,” wbo gave 0 iruwall Pork to the poopla of N-'W litaland. I* has a total elevaiioo of 36 feet, end stands upon a rocky base 16 feet high. The statue itself measures 9 feet 6 inohee.
The Governor, amid prolonged cheering, unveiled the statue, and referred in ouiogisiio terms to the great gonerosity of Sir .Inhn Oampboll and h s gift of Cornwall Paik.
S r John Campbell, ou rising to speak, was received with the greatest enthusiasm. He said Cornwall Park was historic ground, and would bo handod down to posterity as a lasting memorial of the great aboriginal people whoso oouotry we now ocoupy. Ho would like to see ou the summit of 000 Tree Hul an oboliak in memory of the great Maori raoo. Tin proooediogs were concluded by a spreoh from the Mayor (Mr A. M. Myers).

Speaking at tno unveiling of tho statue of Sic John Logan Campbell to day, the Governor said he had received a cablegram from the Earl of Meatb, tho originator of the idea of Empire Day, stating, “Empire, responsibility, duty.” Ho intended to roply to that messago, stating that, “ Wo have ohoßen Empiie Day to honor one whoso life and publio oareer have closely followed those high ideals.” PREMIER’S TRIBUTE.
Tho following cablegram from the Premier at Melbourne was received by tbe secretary of tbe Campboll Ststue Committee at the oonolusian of coromony ;
