EDUCATION BILL.
SCENE IN THE HOUSE.
By telegraph, Presn Afltt’u, Copyright Received 1.42 a in., May 21.
London, May 23 In tho House of Commons, during tbo debate on tho Education Bill, Sir H, Campbell-Bannerman accused Mr Chamberlain of misrepresenting Dr. T. J. MacNamara Mr Chamberlain declared tho inter* vontion was an impertinence. Despite Ministerial cries of “ withdraw," the Chairman declined to call Mr Chamberlain to order. Air E. Maddison moved that no religious instruction bo given in schools transferred under tho Bill during school hours, or at tho public expense. Mr l'. Lough opposed the "amendment, declaring that if religious instruction were not given in schools, very many children would not receive it. It was necessary to employ skilled teachers. Simple Bible reading and moral teaching were not enough. Mr Wyndham hoped that after Mr Lough’s speech the special facilities clause would be made mandatory. Mr Chamberlain thought the secularism of the amendment would violate the instincts of an overwhelming majority. He moved the omission of prohibition of religious instruction in school hours. Progress was reported. Owing to the new development it was expected that the application of the closure will be deferred until next week.
