Ashburton, last night,
Charles Mclntyre, aged 20, was found dead iu bed this morning at his residence in Green street. He was at work yesterday, and in his usual health when he wont to be I. An inquest will be held to-morrow. About two o’clock this morniDg an unoccupied seven-roomed house in Cameron street, owned by George Geddings, was gutted by fire. The origin of the fire is a mystery. The house was insured in the South British office.
Wellington, lost night. An inquest concerning the death of Katherine Theresa Chynoweth, victim of the tram accident at Kent Terrace ... last Wednesday night, was held yesterday. The evidence regarding the movements of deceased and her companions on Wednesday night was rather vague, but the circumstances pointed to death being the result of pure accident, and a verd et was returned accordingly. The motorman of the car concerned was commended for his promptitude in bringing the car to a standstill.
Dunedin, last night. At the inquest touching tho death of Wm. James Mearns, railway shunter, who was killed by a truck passing over him while engaged in plying a shunt in the railway yard, the evidence showed that Mearns was trying to push the waggons apart when his hand slipped and fie fell between the waggons and four wheels passed over him. The jury returned a verdict that death was purely accidental, no blame being attachable to anyone. The directors of the Perpetual Trustees Estate and Agency Company report a profit for the year of £2093. They recommend a dividend of 12* per cent, placing £IOOO to the reserve fund, and carrying forward £1272.
