On Or. Macdonald's motion it was resolved to write to the Public Works Department Kiigincer. pointing out that the Department's drays oil the KarakaMotu road were infringing the Council's by law regulating wheel traffic on County roads.

Cr. Kenway stated that Mr Hemes, had warmly advocated the prosecution of the Pakihi road, which would shorten the distance to Opotiki by 20 miles. . The work was being pushed on at the other end, and it would lie a good step if the Government were approached in the maiter and a grant obtained to push the work forward at this end. The Chairman thought the road was outside the Council's jurisdiction. They could hardly ask a grant for a road in the Opotiki Comity, hut would give every assistance to the movement. It was decided to write to Mr Carroll drawing his attention to the importance of the road. Cr. Ketiwny moved that the resolution appointing the whole Council a committee tor public works he rescinded, and a committee consisting of the Chairman, Crs. Matthews, Lysnar, and the mover he appointed to consider matters in connection with public works, lie considered a large committee too unwieldly. They wanted a small reference committee to deal with matters that had been brought before Council.

The Chairman said lie would not

the motion, it was customary for publicbodies to have such committees, but lie bad never known them to be a success. He considered that the Council should not shift its responsibility oil to a committee.

Cr. Matthews seconded the motioi [le agreed with the chairman that tl

works committee should only deal with minor matters, but considered that there should be a standing committee to whom such matters could be referred. The motion was carried.

It was decided to adjourn the meeting until next Friday at ’ll a.m., when a schedule of urgent works will be considered to submit to the Government for consideration when grants are made.

At Cr. Lysnar’s instance the Council decided to put a man on a certain part of the Tiniroto road for a month to remove boulders and do other improvements.
