COOK COUNTY COUNCIL
Tho usual meeting of tho Cook County Counc'l was hold yesterday, there being present : Captain Tucker (Chairman), Crs Harding, Macdonald, H. Kenway, Matthews and F, Lysnar. Tho Treasury notified that the Mangamaia loan was at the disposal of the County Council.—Received. The Wairoa County Council and the settlors on the Cook County side of tho Ruakaturi river wrote requesting the Council to have that district morgod into the Wairoa county, so that they could raise loans to improve their roads. The Chairman suggested that the answer should be favorable to the prayer of the letter. Cr Lysnar stated that he had spoken to one or two who had signed the pe tition. They were favorable, bu others whom he had spoken to re. quired more information on the ma tor.
The Chairman asked if they had the value and the required number could I the Council veto toe petition. I The clerk stated that there was an amendment which stated that if tne two Councils agreed to the boundary and the Governorin-Council approved [ the alteration could be made. Cr Lysnar stated that the settlers were desirous of forming a dray road, and considered that they could not raise a loan unless all the settlers benefiting came in.—Recaivad. Mr T. Jex-Hlako wrote in regard to clearing water table, stating that ho was prepared to meet the Council's engiueer.
Cr Lysnar asked if a man could be made to clear out a creek or main stream. The Chairman read the Act, which gives the Council power to have obstruction removed, the costs to be a charge on the land and recoverable as rates.
The matter was referred to the engineer.
Messrs DeLiutour, Barker and Stock wrote in connection with Mr Burke’s fat boiling works. It was necessary that the Health Inspector and County Engineer should approve of the application.—Received. The Auckland City Council wrote in regard to a series of numbers for motor cars.—The letter to lie on the table.
Mr Black wrote re crowning Pakowhai road, asking that he be allowed to do the work at a cost of /12 to the County. It was decided that the reply be to the effect that the Council had already dealt with the matter. The Cook Couuty Charitable Aid and Hospital Board wrote asking that Council forward the sum of £l2-I r », their share towards the maintenance of the institution. Cr Matthews moved that the matter be deferred. Cr Harding said the matter was dealt with at the last meeting of the Charitable Aid Board. If they did not erect the infectious diseases ward they would not want the money. Tho matter was held over. The Borough Council wrote re Patutahi stone, stating that they had appointed a committee to confer with a committee from the County Council. Referred to committee, consisting of the Chairman, engineer, Cr Harding and Matthews, tho report to be made at next meeting. The secretary Jof the Waimata Farmers’ Union wrote asking that tho settlers bo allowed to erect a stock paddock on the road reserve near Watson’s crossing. At present they had to make use of Mr ICenway’s yards. Cr Kenway stated that as far as he was concerned settlers were always welcome to put their sheep in any of h's three yards. He did not think the road-men should be deprived of their camping ground.—The question was deferred. Tho clerk stated that thero was a contention botween tho Roads Depart meat and the Council in. regard to the control of road reserves. Council Tho Wharokopao and Tahora Settlors' Association wroto askiug that tho secretary write to Mr Carroll in regard to having an extension of tho road from Fall’s bridge to the junction at Mr Williams' homostoad, Cr ETarding stated that tho Trust Board wero forming threo and a-half miles of road at Tahora to connect with this poiut.

It was decided to writo to the guarantor in tho matter The trustees in the estato of the late William Cooper wroto stating the terms they were willing to allow the deviation through their property. The Chairman statod that thero wero -120 chains of fencing which would cost about £O6 a chain. Cr Konway said thoy should not be in too threat a hurry to close tho old road. It would be useful as a stock track. The engineer stated that the grant would take the road to Barker’s boundary. They could not expend a grant for fencing or compensation. Cr Matthews proposed that steps be taken to close tho Mqkaurau road, Cr Kenway seconding.—Carried. The Va'uation Department wrota forwarding valuation list for Hangaroa Road Board. —Received, Cr P. Cr Konway moved that the Oounoil taka the land and pay tho aotual oest of tho laud, tho settlers to pay all olbor oosts, survey aud tho taking of the land uuder the Public Works Act. Ur Fitzgerald stated that it the Oounoil could uot Bee their way to meet them as desired, they would indemnify tho Oounoil for tho costs. Messrs Sainsbury, Logan and 'Williacup, Napier, wrote forwarding a deed of trust in connection with maintaining the grave of Captain Carr. Left with tho chairman and olerk to arrange. Contract 142—Lifting and breaking and metailieg, Tologa Fiat : Satisfactorily oompletsd. The delivery of broken stone on the Tologa Hill is also well in hand. OoDtraot 150 A Putae deviation : Good progress is being made, and some 50 chains completed, I Contract 150 b, a continuation of above | aeotion through Barker's, is al-.o proceeding satisfactorily. Contract 151— Waibuba Valley road : The ocntractorhas done moro or loss woik over his whole section, and expects to complete before next meeting. Oontraot 154—Ereotion of sbeepbridge, Wharekopae: Satisfactorily complc'ed. Toe saltiers should be requested to erect boldiog yards at the approach s. Cootiaoi 155 Formation and metaling, Wainui : Ten ohains of this road have been complete! from Government grant. Contract 156—Formation, Maogaheia: Proceeding satisfactorily. Contract 159—Bridle track formation, Mangabaumia: This contractor is making good progress with the woik and a party is employed constructing and Bxing permanent oulverts at the wateicjurses. The roads general'y are in fair condition, exoept those portions whioh suffered considerably from thoheavy oarting to depots. The Tokonui road is open for wheel traffic beyond Shanks', and is generally in fair order; tho portion now beiog widened is in tho vioinity of tho Government oo (Continued on page 4 )
