There was another large attendance at the Llite Skating Rink last evening, the item of interest being the final for the Mile Handicap. There were five competitors, and the race proved an exceedingly interesting one, the two scratch men fighting out a splendid finish. Cramp secured the first trophy (a handsome writing desk) and Lucas, who was second, received a set of hair brushes. The rink will be open bn Thursday afternoon and evening and on Saturday hyening.'

Tho supper was on exceptionally good one, the ca'eror being Mrs. Stevens. During tho supper adjournment Mr W. K. Ohambors, Chairj man of tho Patutabi branoh of the Union, expressed his pleasure at Bcoing so many present, and said he hoped that that social would bo the forerunner of many others, including a pionio in tbb summer time, and that the wiveß present would impress upon their husbands the desirability of beooming members of tho Union if they had not already done so. Mr W. Passant OlaytoD, being oallod on as aeorotary of tbe Provincial Executive, said he was very pleased to havo tho honor of addrossiog those present at a social of the Patutabi branoh of the Union. Ho hod, bb they knew, addroseed Patutabi audionoes on other occasions, and had at all times been meat warmly rooeived, and naturally bad a very kindly feeling towards tbat district. Mr Chambers, in his address, had omitted to mention the sweethearts of the youDg men whom he saw around him ; they should use their influence towards enlisting members of the Union. During the evening songs were given by Mr F. Paiker, of Wairoa, and Mr J. C. Woodward, while Mr Clayton rendered in a very acceptable way a whistling solo, for whioh he was entbusia*t : cally encored. The members of the social committee all performed their work admirably, the affair being most successful. It is hoped that Mr Chambers prediction will be verified, and that the pleasant gathering will be the forerunner of otbera'under the same auspioee, and that a pionio will take place duriug the summer monlhs.
