Received 10 45 p.m,, May 7 Pietermaritzburg, May 7 Colonol Mansell has reached Fori Yolland, eighteen miles west o; Eshowo. He reeonnoitro3 towards Cetewayo’s gravo. Whilst the force was travelling through a forest several shots were fired, wounding a trooper. The troop descended the hill iu single file and entered moro open country. Two hundred Zulus desperately charged the vanguard of the Natal Mounted liifles, and almost got in amongst the troopers. Natal supports rushed up and the attack was repelled. Sixty Zulus were killed and many wounded. Three Natalians were wounded. One thousand rebels were seen. There are indications that while a portion which made the first onslaught were engaged the Zulus made an encircling movement, which proved premature. Colonel Mansell reports that the native police were attacked. The Natal Mountods behaved courageously and did good work during the engagement. Received 12.30 a.m , May 8. Colonel Mansell captured two hundred cattle and burnt many kraals. When emerging from the forest and returning to the fort, small bodies of the enemy followed, sniping. The fire was returned, the Zulus losing several. Colonel Mansell commanded the Durban Light Infantry, and their steadiness in a critical stage prevented serious casualties. Only Colonel Mansell’s prompt dis« ! position of the forces prevented their assailants completing an identical crescent formation with that employed , at Isandkhvana. , Colonels Mackenzie and Mansell are i trying to keep the rebels together, and then crushing the movement. e —;
