GISBORNE FARMERS’ UNION

ANNUAL MEETING.

The annual meeting of the Gisborne branoh of the Farmers’ Union was held on Saturday afternoon. There was a large and representative attendance, Me W. DLysnar presiding. The annual report, which was of n most oomprehensivo oharaoter, was read and adopted. The repo:t dealt fully with the questions of ocean freights, patty politics, telephone concessions, grants for roads and bridges, Land Board matters, and the importance of bettering the tourist facilities of the district, as well as a number of other matteis. The Chairman considered it satisfactory that the branch had been active during the year, but bo urged that members might bo more vigorous than they bad been. There were 127 aotive members, and 65 of those paid up. Subscriptions paid up amounted to £24 7s 61, and unpaid £23. They bad at present just about enough money to liquidate all expenses to datp, with £23 to come in, leaving a surs plus after the Executive’s portion bad been paid out. The election of officers was then pro. oeeded with, Mr Birrell proposing the re eleotion of Mr Lysnar ss Chairman. No one, ho said, bad teksn more interest in farming mo'ters in Poverty Bay than Mr Lysnar had done. Mr Holden seconded the motion, which was unanimously adopted. Mr T. Holden was re-dected vioeChairman.

they had a very good eooretary. In the short time he had been in office be had backed over £4O for tho Union and the Club.

Me Holden's motion re the importat'on of a bull to improve the breed of dairy cows, and tbe importation of an entire to improve the breed of horees in the dietric*, was brought up for discussion. Mr Holden said that he bad seen Mr Thompson, Stock Inspector, and tbe latter expressed himself in complete sympathy with the movement, and promised lo wiite to the Department in regard to the matter. Discussion took place in regerd to the breed of bull whioh would be most suit-* | able, and amoDgst those mentioned were the red Danish and Shorthorn. It was deoided to write to the Stock DepattmeDt for ioformation regarding the beet class of bull to import. The question of tbe horse was postponed. Consideration of Mr Gallagher’s motion ro the cutting up of large estates io the district, and several otbec matters, was adjourned so as to enable the members of the branch to meet Mr D. C. Mclntyre, travelling representative of the Nsw Zealand exhibition. A vote of thanks to the Chairman ter minated the proceedings,
