Sub-Inspector Gordon statod that tho presont forco was not sulliciont for tho ordinary polico dutios of Auckland. Complaints had boon mado and lotters written to tho papors that moro polico woro required, but thoy woro doing thoir host with tho forco available. Sub-Inspector Gordon also statod that on ono occasion
thoro was only ono policoman on duty in tho city. Mr Kettle, S.M., oxprossed surpriso at tho statomont. When ho amo to Auckland ho saw at onco thoro was not sufliciont polico, and ho understood tho forco was to bo considerably incroascd, and that this laid boon done.
Goorgo Turloy, agod '!■>, and Mattliow Turbott, aged 20, woro drowned at Lako Waikaro, near Iluntly, yostorday, through a boat capsizing. Thoir bodios havo not boon rocovored. Turloy leaves a wife and four children. Dunedin, las-t night. Tho Meiklo Commission opened this
morning, before Judges Edwards and Cooper. Mr Atkinson (Wellington) appeared for Mr Meiklo, and Dr Pindlay for the .Crown. At tho request of counsel, it was agreed to rise daily at 1 p.m. Mr Atkinson then addressed tho Court at some length. Ho urgod that if Mr Meiklo should have been rightly convicted he ought to be sent back to gaol as a determined and persistent scoundrel. If, on the other hand, he had been wrongly convicted he ought to be sent back to gaol as a determined and persistent scoundrel. If, on the other hand, ho had been wrongly convicted, by the evidence of the perjured witness, and Mr Meikle’s innocence established, neither the Commission, nor Government, nor Parliament would havo much inclination to haggle over the terms of redress to which a man was entitled.
■ The Presbytery have sustained the call by the North-East Valley congregation to tho Eev. Mr Gray, of St, Andrew’s, Auckland.
