TENDERS ACCEPTED. ' A speoial mealing of the Borough Counoil wsi held last night to deal with the tenders for tho waterworks. All the Coun« oillnrs woro present, the Mayor presiding. It was resolved to go into oommilteo to opan tho tenders; tho rep osentatives of the press wero oaliod upon to withdraw, and tho doors woro oloaed — tho first timo this has ocourrod for many years. There was a very animated disoussion, which at times was heard from tho street. Pooplo patiently awaited until after 11 o’clock, when the doors woro again thrown open. In tho meantime a little sensation bad beon oreated by Mr Julian being oaliod in, whioh caused a report to bo circulated that his tender was tho lowest ; but as that jentliman again loft tbo Council room tnd a lively discussion continued, tbo tatienoo of somo who woro waiting be* lame exhausted, and they retired. It was ■iftor 11 o’olobk when tho ratepayers were taken into the confidence of the Oounci 1 , and it whs disolosed that tho tenders aooopted wore— Mossrs Smithors and Co. for tho main pipe line (£3B 870), Messrs Moody and Co. for tho reticulation work (£21,788). Tho Mayor congratulated the Counoil ou having made this very substantial pro* gress towards tho fulfilment of the water supply sohome approved by the ratepayers. Ho hoped that there would now bo a cessation of talk, that work would be rapidly proceeded with, and that in good time the borough would have a bountiful supply of water. It is now hoped that everything will prooeed smoothly, and that tbo people will within a reasonable period get tho promised supply, oonoerning which there has been disoussions for about a quarter of a century.
