ITS DEMORALISING EFFECT.

Some pointed remarks on the totalisetor were made at the Police Ooutt by Me C. C. Kettle, S.M, A youth had been re minded, on a oharge of stealing money from his employer, in order to receive the probat on officer’s report. The report was not favorable, aod stated among other things tbst tbe youth frequented raoeoourses. Mr Kettle, who had frequently spoken agaiusi the attendance of boys aod youths at raoecourses, s'a’ed that in his opinion tbe totalieator should never hive been legalised by the State The maohine was a great temptation to men and yonths, and sinoe it had been introduced it had demoralised the youth of the colony. He also said de'ibf rately that the remarks uttered by some members of tbe House when the totaliaa’or was legalised had been borne out. The detrimental effects of tbe maohine were beiDg fully realised in this colony.
