The report of the Comptroller Gmeral cf Prisons to December'3lst last shows that the doorcase in the number of prisoners continues. It was to note that crime was not increasing.., ; within the Commonwealth. Inquiry as to the nationality of | prisoners in the State shows that 1545 oame from neighboring States, while those born in New Zealand contribnted a large number, 352. Viotoria sent 795. Nearly half of New South Wales prison population were native born ; 3637 oame from tbe United Kingdom, 652 from Europe, 314 from America, and 200 from Asia and the South Seas.
