SUICIDE SENSATION.

MAN SHOOTS HIMSELF IN ARM? RING.

(Per Press Association.) Auckland, last night. A njaa named Walter Newman, aged 31, shot himself with a revolver in the Salvation Army ring in Victoria street on Saturday night. Ho asked to speak, to the officer in charge, and as the latter w T as about to speak to him he put a revolver to his mouth and shot himself, dying shortly after. Newman was an Englishman, and had lately been working at Morrinsvilie.

Newman, on entering the Army ring, said he wanted to see the captain. The band was playing and the Salvationists were singing the hymn, “He Paidoneth a rebel like Me.” Newman was heard to say “ Yes, he pardoned a rascal like me.” Adjutant Dixon told Newman to wait till the hymn was finished and then he woq d speak to him. Then Newman displayed a revolver and blew his brains out.

The adjutant’s hands were covered with blood, but ho was uninjured. By his instructions the band played some lively airs to allay the excitoment till the police arrived and removed the body. Substquently it was learned that Newman was a single man, aged 31, a surveyor on a visit from Morrinsvilie. He was well connected in England, hailing from Earlescoom, Worcester.
