A TRAGEDY.
PROMINENT OFFICIAL SHOT DEAD BY CITIZENS.

Mr Tilden, a member of the Governor’s staff, prominent in relief work, was shot dead in an automobile in San Francisco at dawn by six citizen patrolmen, who fired without
warning. The automobile was used as an ambulance to convey sick and wounded to the hospital, and flew the red-cross flag. One million and a half dollars have been voted at Washington for relief.

ASSISTING SUFFERERS. (Per Press Association.) Dunedin, last night. A meeting oonvened by the mayor to consider what steps should be taken to assist sufferers by the Bin Francisco disaster was held this afternoon. After discussing the attitude of President Roosevelt, it was resolved that the President of the United States having publicly notified that general help from abroad is unnecessary, but it being understood there are large numbers of New Zealanders resident in San Franc’seo who have in all probability suffered grievous loss through the calamity that has fallen the city, a committee be formed to co operate, if requited, with other centres |n Naw Zealand in raising funds for their relief. A resolution was previously passed, expressing sympathy, and the mayor was authorised to cable it to the mayor of San Franoisco.
THE MAILS. '(Pot Press Asaooiatioa.) Auokland, last night. In regard to tbs interruption to the San Franoisoo servioo Messrs Heoderson and Macfarlane, the agents, elate that they are not prepared to make any official statement, but it is understood that while the exact course is not known it seems that the service will be resumed by steamer leaving San Francisco on May 10th, whioh means that one foward and one outward mail will bo withdrawn. This info maticn they hope to make officially publio within the next three days.

In the absence of any definite information as to the extent of the Companie.’ losses through the Sen Francisco disaster the New Zealand Insurance Company's shares showed considerable fluctuation on ’ObaDge to-day. Sales raDged from £3 ti £2 12s 6d lo £3 to £2 16s lo £3 lo £2 18s 6d. The closing quotations were : Salle s £2 18s 6d, buyers £2 17s. South British sold at £5 10s and £5 si, olosing with sellers at £5 10s and buyers at £5 2s 6d.
