Professor Thomas, of Auckland UniverBity College, on being interviewed by Herald reporter regarding Professor Milner’s theory, said it appeared to him that it would be extremely difficult to prove any departure of the earth from its axis. 11 There are,” he said, “ sufficiently obvious causes of earthquakes withe?* 1 having recourse to suoh a theory. Two lady millionaires and leaders of New York society have been ruined, their property being in ’Frisco and uninsured. The commander of the San Franoisoo Fire Brigade stated on Thursday evening that over two-thirds of the City had been destroyed, and no possibility of saving the remainder. A cablegram sent by Mr J. F. Pettie to his wife at Las Angelos has so far not been replied to, but there would naturally be considerable delay in regard to any f] messages. \ To-day's cablegrams oontain startling information regarding Los Angelos. Borne anxiety is felt regarding Dr Albert Sykes, a former Gisborne resident, and brother of Mr Sykes, of Gisborne. Dr Sykeß is in tbe zone of the disturbance, and two cablegrams sent to him by his relatives have failed to elicit any reply. A cablegram to Mr Arnold Foster has not been replied to, but it is believed that where he resides he would be safe from the disaster overtaking the business portion of the city. Mr Charles Nield has a brother and sister residing in San Franoisoo, bis brother (Mr John Nield) being traffic manager for the Union Pacific railway. Mrs Mitchell, mother of Mr R. Milohell (Gisborne manager for Messrs R. Hannah ! and Co.) is in Sm Francieco on a visit to -1 her cousin, Dr Herring. -l Among other Gisborne people who hat's relatives in Ban Franoisoo is Mrj RavGD, whose sister resides there.
