Sydnoy, April 19. Statistics in 1905 show that tho population increased by 34,500 on the preceding year, of which 24,500 was by oscess of births over deaths. Tho birth-rate was equivalent to 26‘72 por thousand. In tho metropolitan aroa the birth rate was the highest for ten years. The death rate was 1013 per thousand, which'was 5 per cent, below the mean average for tho last ten years. Deaths from phthsis were the lowest for five years, while the mortality from cancer is steadily increasing, the rate being 12 per million higher than tho quinquennial average. Tenakoo was withdrawn from the Hurdles yesterday, owing to one of uis legs filling. Sir R. Stout, interviewed by the Herald, regretted the decline of exportations from New Zealand to tho
I Commonwealth. There was need for I some sort of reciprocity. Tho Herald, commenting on the interview, fails to I see the necessity for reciprocity, reI marking that we can produce everything that New Zealand can produce, and if we are inclined to the opinion that, we can prodmeo it better, the opinion may at the worst bo esteemed an error of judgment.
