Mr George Gilding, of Napier, has been appointed secrotary and wharfinger to the Wairoa Harbor Board. Nipk-r, last night. Messrs T. Carnoll (the present Mayor), W. J. McGrath, and G. H. Granby have been nominated for the Mayoralty. Palmorston North, last night.
Interest in tho recent fatal shooting affray hero was revived to-day, when Maria Harris appoared before the Court charged with tho murder of Frederick Halvatial Murfitt, on March 21st Accused, who is still an inmate of tho hospital, suffering from the effects of a self iullictod gun wound and a doso of liniment for external application which she drank apparently with suicidal intent, was obviously in a weak state of health. She was formally charged and remanded till the 27th inst. ; .and in the meantime will be detained in Wellington gaol. Blenboim, last night.
Mr Scott Smith, S.M., delivered a reserved judgment in a case in which a petition was lodge.l against tho return of four roforni members of the Wairau Liconsing Committeo, on the grounds of non-payment of tho £lO deposit required by Soctiou 08 of the Electoral Act, 1905. Tho Magistrate rulol that tho section did not apply to liconsing elections. He added : ‘ Even assuming that the Electoral Act, 1005, did apply to elections of liconsing committees,' the fact that tho returning officer blundered in not retaining tho deposits was not such an irrogularity as would, in my opinion, enable mo to declaro tho election void.” The petition was dismissed without costs.
