Mr Charles E. Purchase, of the firm of Wynyard and Purchase, solicitors, died last night, as tho result of injuries sustained two years ago while riding to hounds. Hamilton, last night.
Mr Ilursthouse, chief engineer for roads, was taken to Waikato hospital yesterday, suffering from gastric hemorrhage. Hastings, last night. The Presbyterian Church has unanimously decided to send a call to tho Rev. Donald Mclvor, of Herbert, Otago. Miss G. Gray, of Kumoroa, has been recommended as third assistant mistress to Hastings district school.
Ekctabunp, last n'gbt. A general storo at Hamua, owned by J. Cavanah and occupied by P. Clark, was totally destroyed by fire. The origin is unknown. The building was injured for £2OO in the London Liverpool and the stock for £7OO in tho Queensland office. ' Wellington, last night. The New Zealand Rugby Union has received a further communication from the English Rugby Union on the question of whether a player injured during a gamo can bo replaced while the gamo is in progress. The English body state that there is nothing in the laws of the gamo to prevent such a course, and leaves the matter to the discretion of the New Zealand Union. The latter is notifying affiliated unions of the English Union’s opinion. Mr T. H. Ilamer, Undor-Secretary for Mines, has boen appointed as Executive Commissioner of the New Zealand Exhibition. Tho balance-sheet of the Police Provident Eund shows that the amount now Jin hand is £27,121, as compared with £24,875 three years ago. The steamer Mararoa was late in arriving from Lyttelton to-day, owing to two mishaps on the journey. When passing near the moles at Lyttelton, the steamer came in contact with the moorings of the dredge, with the result that she swung on to the mud bank, where she was detained about an hour and a half. At five o’clock this morning a slight breakdown occurred in tho engineroom, and it was 5.30 before matters righted sufficiently for the vessel to continue on her voyage. Oamaru, last night.
During the past year there has been a large increase in the valuation. Tho Mayor anticipates there is no difficulty whatever in store for the borough on account of prohibition, as the increase in revenue more than compensates for the loss of license fees. Dunedin, last night. The death is announced of Mr J. Nugent Wood, a former goldfields Magistrate and Warden, aged 80 years. Ljttslton, last night. At the Lyttelton Magistrate’s Court to-day, Lilian McMahon, alias Martin, a prepossessing young woman, pleaded guilty to having stolen £6B from Catherine Buckley, an old woman with whom she lodged. She took the money from drawers, and a portmanteaux in her room. She was remanded to the Supreme Court for sentence.
