WAIROA NEWS.
(Saturday’s Guardian.) A tine mob of 1 GOO lambs from Mr T. Carswell’s Putorina station passed through Wairoa on Thursday on route to Mr J. J. Parker’s station at Opoiti. Mr G. Perkins’ storo at the corner of'Murray street and Marine Parado has been sold to Mr C. Roberts, and is being shifted to Mrs P. Wilson’s leasehold site near the bridge. A mob of 300 young cattle, from various Gisborne stations, passed over the Wairoa bridge on Thursday morning, in charge of Mr Fairley, en route to the Waikato. Mr H. G. Webber broke his left shoulder bone recently whilst erecting a telegraph pole on the other side of Mr Hamlin’s. The bank on which Mr Webber was standing gave way, and the pole fell, causing the injury. The Maori ball on Wednesday night was well attended, there being a good many Europeans present also. Lancing was kept up till an early hour next morning. One unfortunate incident occurred, of which perhaps more may be hoard later on. A native woman named Netta rvas being put out by a native, and as he got her to the door gave her an extra push and sho fell, dislocating her ankle and fracturing it as well. She was taken to the hospital the same night. The now route to Gisborne via the Mangapoiko Yalloy is likely to bo strongly in evidence ore long, as the settlers intend to mako application to Parliament for a substantial vote for the prosecution of the work. Tho now road will save IGA miles —it will be only 23 miles to Te Arai valley road from Wairoa, but about 221 miles of new road will have to be made. It is now under consideration to take the road in through Mr I E. Taylor’s Burnside property, where a grad o nearly level can be obtained. This new road, whichever way it goes, will open up a splondid lot of ■ country, from which in a fow years a largo quantity of wool and thousands of head of sheep and cattle will be exported.
