RUFFIANS’ ATTACK.
ASSAULT AND ROBBERY IN AUCKLAND. (Per Press Association.) Auckland, last n’ght. A case of assault and robbery took place last evening at the Cemetery Gully, whioh einee the removal of the lata footbridge. haß borne a bad reputation in respeot to deeds of violenoe. The viotim on this occasion was Mr A. G. Roberts, music teacher, who on going down the steps leading into the gully passed between two well-dressed men smoking cigars. Hardly had he passed them when be felt his coat grasped at the back, and as he swung round a violent effort was made to pull it up and envelope his head, while one of bis arms was gripped and a hand shot round to grasp at his gold albert. Realising the situation Mr Roberts exerted himself to suoh good purpose that be broke awa>, but with his ooat ripped up to his neck at. the back and his watch chain in the hands of one of the misoreantr. Fortunately the ohain broke, leaving a 'aluablegold watob n Mr Roberts’ pocket.
