Wellington, last night. Nows has been rtoeived by tho polioo of a deplorable shooting affair whioh took plaoe early this morning at Pirinoa, near Marlinborough, in the Wairnrapa. On Saturday morning Albert Stubbs, cm ployed in tho Railway Department at Ohristohurch, and James Evans, employed in Ross and Glendonning’s waro house at Ohristohurch, arrived from the South and procoeded to Maryborough to meo; a young man named Fred Hawke, tbe throo having arranged a do 'r .stalking expedition.

appears that they wore this morning pursuing a stag in oompany. The animal boundod into some scrub. Stubbs also wont into tho trees, and Hawke, who was some diaiauae away, just saw the top of his bead. Thinking that Stubbs’ boid was part of tho stag Hawks firod, killing his companion.
Mr Stubbs was tho eon of Anthony Stubbs, inspector of permanent way at Wanganui, He was a member of tho sixth contingent in South Afrioa,
