GREATEST ERUPTION SINCE 1631.

Vosuvius ejected thousands of incandoscont rooks to a height of throe thousand foot, with deafening ex-
plosions. Thoro have boon continued earthquakes in the villages at the base of
tho mountains. Thousands of inhabitants refuged in Naples. A river of lava 20 feet in height and COO feet wide swept rapidly towards Torreannunziata, which was abandoned. Subsequently the flow slackened.
The observatory aud Funicular railway have been destroyed. Severn porsous wore killed and others are missing at Sanguiseppo, A showor of ashes darkened the atmosphere 20 miles away, Tho King and Queen of Italy are motoring in the vicinity of Vosuvius. Ono hundred and fifty thousand refugees have crowded into Naples, where the cinders are one foot thick. Five inhabitants of Torreanunziata wore engulfed, and eighteen, severely injured, just escaped. Otherwise there lias been little loss of life. There is sevon feet of lava at Ottogiano. The eruption is tho greatest since that of 1631. Tho lava flow is appar ently mitigating.
