London, April 8. Mr Lloyd George has appointed a committee to inquire into the bankruptcy law. The British imports for March increased by £4.287,000, and tho exports by £3,580,000, .compared with the previous March. Three hundred and slxty-ono thousand and seventy-eight pounds was contributed to the King’s hospital fund last year. The normal receipts are £21,000 over expenditure. Tho capital is nearly a million.

Sydney, April 9. A man has been sentenced to death at Dubbo for outraging a girl. The evidence indicated that he was engaged in trafficking with young girls for vile purposes. The opinion is expressed in political circles that the retirement of the Chief Railway Commissioner is inevitable, and the continuance in office of tho junior Commissioner is at least undesirable.'
Over 303,000 people have viewed Mr Holman Hunt’s famous picture, “ The Light of the World,” in Sydney. It will be despatched to New Zealand this week.
Indications point to a further increase in the price of coal to 10s. The manager of Sargood and Company, speaking at the annual picnic, said there had been an increase of 45 per centum in the business done by the firm in the past two months. From what he could gather a similar satisfactory state of affairs could be reported by most Sydney firms, leaving no room for doubt to the return of good times.
