BETTING CASES.

At tbe Police Court G. Williams (Christchurch), James Marsden (Wellington) and S. H. Brierly (Wellington) were charged with belting at the Taranaki Jockey Club’s raoes. One pleaded guilty, stating that he was unaware of the borough, by law, making it illegal to oall odds on a portion of the course, which is a borough reserve, and under whioh bylaw the charges were brought. The other two pleaded not guilty by telegram, but the Stipendiary Magistrate declined to accept such a plea. He said that when he inflicted fines in the previous oases he gave a warning that subsequent breaobes of tho by-law would be dealt with severely. He inflicted fines of £lO etob, on account of the first day’s battiog, and £2O each on the seoond, or a total of £3O, with costs £1 17s.
