NEGOTIATIONS STILL * PROCEEDING.

The impending shipping war between the subsidised Federal line on the otie hand aod ihe direct linos on the other .hae not yet opened, Negoliations are still in progress, but whether they will lead to'a settlement of the trouble seems very uncertain, although it is hoped in some quarters that an open rupture may bs avoided. Mr I Gibbs, the manager of the New Zealand Shipping Co , one of tbe direct lines affooted, and Mr J. J, Kinsey, of Kinsey, Burns and Co., tbe looal agents of the Federal line, were seen yeEferday morning, but both these gentlemen were very reluctant to give any information at all on the present situation and the probable coußequeuooß, I hey stated that while tbo negaiiations were pendiDg the parties interested were most anxious that nothing of what was transpiring should be madß public. Ooe of tbe gentlemen approaohed admitted, however, ibßt tbe present position was most acute, and sometbiDg would have to go shortly.
